Welcome back to the latest edition of this Humber Spotlight!
I, Henri Murison, Chief Executive at The Northern Powerhouse Partnership and Future Humber Board member, am ready to address Future Humber stakeholders at the Principal and Major Partners meeting on October 24th. I will be providing the latest updates regarding the devolution deals and what the changes ahead will mean for business here in Humber.
Last month, the Deputy Prime Minister the Rt Hon Angela Rayner MP confirmed both banks of the Humber Estuary, following the hard work of the council leaders involved, are moving forward in lockstep to Devolution. Two deals, one economy.
What is so positive is that businesses here have already been working together – and Humber Freeport and Humber Energy Board are drawn together in a common narrative to the rest of the country and the world through the Humber place brand work being delivered by Future Humber. When I spoke at the Humber Maritime Dinner last month I set out the huge achievements of all these institutions, and the opportunities before them.
On Carbon Capture and Storage, we are awaiting progress but it was heartening to hear the Chancellor in her speech to the Labour conference make clear her commitment to rolling out a pipeline to create new jobs and protect existing ones from Drax to Phillips 66. It is only disappointing the last government made such slow progress on the pipeline – meaning that the blast furnace at Scunthorpe will have closed by time it is ready rather than be able to be saved. In the coming Autumn Budget, we also need for the good of the whole North for the fiscal rules to be changed so government can borrow to invest in big projects – including the electrification to bring Northern Powerhouse Rail to Hull.
Henri Murison, Chief Executive, The Northern Powerhouse Partnership
