Issue 47 - 1st November 2024

Time is moving fast, and we’ll soon be welcoming 2025, taking what we’ve learned into future plans, while looking back on all of our respective achievements. No one can deny there’s a lot to be proud of. I couldn’t have imagined when I left Grimsby years ago (before returning) that one day I’d be hugely advocating for this region. I’ve now spent more than a decade doing just that so earlier this year I was honoured to have been invited to take part in the development of a new ‘place narrative’ for our region, headed up by Future Humber. Now as a cultural development ‘lead’ for Northeast Lincs - delivering what I hope are impactful place projects through arts organisation The Culture House - this felt like a significant and important regional exercise, exploring what makes us distinct from other areas in the UK. This collaborative work has enabled us to define with confidence - and to celebrate - our collective identity and strengths. In the Humber we’ve proven ourselves to be hugely resourceful while working within a real and challenging environment and it never ceases to amaze me the levels of revolutionary innovation and remarkable 'change-making' that is happening here, all driven by passionate people. To help share projects, best practice, and embed the place brand values, we are asking businesses and organisations to nominate a place ambassador to belong to a Place Ambassador Team. We believe that, collectively, we can share more of our inspiring stories of advancement. The first Humber place ambassador event is on the 16th of January, and we encourage businesses to get in touch and be part of the story. That is exactly what we aim to do through The Culture House’s flagship creative programme Our Future Starts Here. To champion our place and spotlight the developments within it, to celebrate talent and shift perceptions, while furthering public understanding of 'sustainable futures' and the world leading industries based here driving this. We’re on a journey into the future and taking the public with us - 98% of this year’s audience said Our Future Starts Here made them feel proud of where they live. That is huge, not only evidencing that arts and culture are great tools for raising public awareness but that perception of place does means a lot. As one audience member told us: “I want to show my children that this area has a bright future and change the narrative for the place.” It’s safe to say that between us all we're managing to do just that.
Charlotte Bowen, Founder and Creative Director, The Culture House

On Wednesday, 27th November, The Waterline and its partners will host a dynamic one-day event focused on the critical role of engaging the next generation in the net zero agenda, and how fostering collaboration and meaningful partnerships drives action for real impact. The morning session will feature an "in conversation" style business breakfast with leaders from business, and UK Government to discuss key sustainability topics critical to the Humber and the UK’s net-zero transition. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with a student-led exhibition showcasing innovative sustainability projects, and vote on their favourite projects, with winners announced during the Student Sustainability Challenge Awards later in the day.
|
|
Following the The Waterline Business Breakfast, the afternoon will focus on the next generation of sustainability leaders. Ruth Amos, an award-winning inventor, engineer, and one-half of the YouTube channel Kids Invent Stuff will give an inspirational keynote speech to students as well as taking part in the judging process ahead of the Waterline Student Challenge awards.
You are invited to engage with these future innovators by visiting the student exhibition where you can discover next-gen solutions and vote for your favourite project. Finalists of the Phillips 66 Sustainability Challenge will showcase their projects as part of the student exhibition. The top three teams will be invited to present their ideas on stage during the awards ceremony.
