Having made it my duty to champion all things business in the region for the best part of two decades, it is a privilege to help bring you The Humber Spotlight today.
I enjoyed a front row seat for the Humber’s emergence as the Energy Estuary, as the journalist tasked with reporting on it. From those first vessel launches to near-shore wind farm construction sites, and the onward operations and maintenance that is gradually filling a damaging void left by diminishing trawler fleets, we have seen a new maritime might emerge.
A legacy of port capacity, engineering excellence and geographic good fortune has seen the Humber become a global leader in a sector unheard of not so long ago. It has also provided the platform to expand clean and green credentials. The incredible blade factory, the unstinting appetite for transforming traditional heavy industry, and so much more.
Now, with creative communications consultancy Fred, I’m delighted to bring that knowledge and experience to businesses in the region and beyond as we look ahead.
And the upcoming Waterline will allow us to do just that as we consider the next generation’s role. I’m looking forward to hosting a breakfast chat with pioneering leaders who are really making inroads, on behalf of Future Humber.
It is an event that aligns so much with my take on all that has been achieved, with the need to alert and issue a call to action to those in power beyond this great region. For whatever the political make-up, it is the future of the Humber that counts and what will deliver. The message in my dealings with business was that the Humber was always the economic driver. From those early shipping and seafood synergies and rivalries, the development of process and power, to vital decarbonisation. So much is here, now, and it is high time the huge project pipeline of potential we’re so versed in is uncapped.

On Wednesday, 27th November, The Waterline and its partners will host a dynamic one-day event focused on the critical role of engaging the next generation in the net zero agenda, and how fostering collaboration and meaningful partnerships drives action for real impact. The conversations will highlight the Humber’s strategic importance in achieving the UK’s net zero ambitions, emphasising a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and a people-centred approach. Discussions with our speakers will cover the region’s leadership in environmental responsibility, including “planet first” business strategies, alongside the critical need to prioritise purpose over short-term profit. Equally, the speakers will explore how empowering the next generation, promoting diversity in STEM careers, and fostering a workforce that drives sustainable solutions are essential to securing the region's green future.

Following the The Waterline Business Breakfast, the afternoon will focus on the next generation of sustainability leaders. Ruth Amos, an award-winning inventor, engineer, and one-half of the YouTube channel Kids Invent Stuff will give an inspirational keynote speech to students as well as taking part in the judging process ahead of the Waterline Student Challenge awards.
You are invited to engage with these future innovators by visiting the student exhibition where you can discover next-gen solutions and vote for your favourite project. Finalists of the Phillips 66 Sustainability Challenge will showcase their projects as part of the student exhibition. The top three teams will be invited to present their ideas on stage during the awards ceremony.

Around 140 delegates from across the UK attended the Coast-R Network’s national launch event on 6 November at the University of Hull.
Stakeholders from universities, industry, NGOs and the wider community came together around the theme of coastal resilience. In reflecting on the day, Coast-R Network lead, Prof Briony McDonagh of the University of Hull said: “I’ve been bowled over today by the knowledge and experience in the room, by the incredible goodwill between partners, and by the collective commitment to negotiating the urgent challenges at our coasts. This provides a mandate for action and a meaningful basis for future cooperation and collaboration.”
